This is fantastic Cormac - a very exciting development. I love the metaphor of the leaf, plant and surroundings - so obvious when you think about it. I too was in Copenhagen and struck by the contrast between the formal negotiations and the energy o…

The systems which industrial civilisations use to regulate human behaviour (e.g. value, legal, political, economic and educational systems) are promoting rather than preventing the degradation and destruction of our habitat. We will need to fundamentally change these systems so that they prioritise maintaining the health and integrity of the whole Earth community if we are to address environmental crises (like climate change) and related social problems successfully. This will require reconnecting with the wild creative energies that brought our Earth community into being and continue to animate it, and to create systems that nurture our connections with this community and participation in it.

The book Wild Law describes a new Earth-centred approach to governance called "Earth jurisprudence" and advocates the development of "wild laws" that reflect this approach. This will require refining our understanding of the principles of Earth Jurisprudence, an understanding of the fundamental principles that govern the natural systems which we are part of (Ecological intelligence), drawing on the wisdom of more ecologically literate cultures (Indigenous wisdom), and developing a global consensus on the rights and obligations of members of the Earth Community (see Universal Declaration of Planetary Rights and UDPR tag).

Principles for collaboration

1. Many minds working together with a common purpose and shared values can achieve far more than any of us could alone.
2. Feel free to be critical but seek to be constructive and to make a positive contribution to this collaborative endeavour.

'Client Earth' and James Thornton on Radio National (Australia)

Dear All,

Just writing with a quick link that might be of interest; recently Radio National (Aus) aired an interview on its 'Stillpoint' Summer program with James Thornton, an environmental lawyer espousing Wild Law principles through his work as CEO of 'Client Earth', which has offices in London, Paris and Brussels. In the interview, Thornton spoke of the connection between social activism and mindfulness meditation, and the importance of creating new narratives to facilitate positive future d… Continue

Copenhagen -Declaration of Rights of Mother Earth

Last Wednesday 9 December 2009 I had the privilege of speaking at a side event on the Rights of Mother Earth at COP 15 in Copenhagen. The event was hosted by the Government of Bolivia who very generously included me in their delegation to enable me to have access to the Bella Center where the UNFCCC COP 15 talks are taking place. After a moving prayer by two Bolivian indigenous leaders, the Bolivian ambassador to the United Nations (Pablo Solon) introduced the session, after which I spoke and th… Continue

Dear Peter, Maria, Julia, Ben and others
Thank you so much for posting up info about your experiences of the Wild Law weekend in Adelaide and particularly for the photos - felt like I could participate vicariously to some extent!
This weekend my partner Max (Mary Ann) and I attended celebrations to mark the 25th anniversary of the End Conscription Campaign ("ECC") in SA. The ECC achieved its goal many years ago and so no longer exists as a formal organisation but the weekend showed me that the c… Continue
